READ THIS RAVE REVIEW:
“Having been involved in the martial arts nearly my entire life, it came as no surprise to my friends or family that one of the first things I did after moving down to San Diego was look for a decent martial arts academy from where I could train while I pursued my degree in Computer Science. One of the first schools that came to my attention was the Harris Academy. To this exact day, ten years later, I am still a student here.
Having had a background in several martial arts such as TaeKwonDo, Aikido, Karate and Wing Chun and having met many notable instructors in those respective arts, I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for in a school. I sought instructors that had an eye towards realism in combat. Being a college student at the time, I was also leery of schools that were hungry for fresh meat. Not being interested in training half-heartedly or acting as someone’s punching bag, I knew I had to choose a school carefully. Within days of beginning my training at the Harris Academy, I knew I had found the perfect balance of training and camaraderie.
What originally caught my eye was the instruction offered in Brazilian Jiujitsu, but it was initial instruction in that art that made me realize I had come to the right place. Being a realist, I had no illusions about the realism of ground fighting and it’s applicability to a real confrontation. While it has it’s place, it is no panacea for the realm of self-defense. I wondered how my new instructors would approach this subject with the students. I was pleasantly surprised to hear from them that, while an effective art, it would not be the first line of defense they would employ if they ever had to defend themselves in a realistic scenario. Staying aware of the surroundings and avoiding situations where circumstances could escalate into violence are the cornerstones of good self defense. These were lessons I learned immediately from the exceptional staff in the Harris Academy, but were definitely not the last and certainly not the most important.
Machismo runs high in competitive sports. The martial arts are no exception. Given their combative nature, the risk of injury can be quite high and can rise exponentially if egos are allowed to flare. From the outset, that was not the case at the Harris Academy. It was made clear on the spot that, while we train seriously, we train with consideration for our training partners. Greater seniority in the skill hierarchy meant greater expectation of the student to encourage and train those under him/her. I’m proud to say that that has been the case in the past ten years I’ve trained here and even prouder to say that that is an ongoing tradition.
Make no mistake. If you are serious about getting decent martial arts instruction and are looking for a place to receive it where people are both skilled and courteous, then you owe it to yourself to train at the Harris Academy. You’ll find no better place to train than here with a group of instructors and students who will not only give you great leaps forward in terms of martial skill, but also enrich your life with the easy-going camaraderie always present in the school.
